Woman killed in head-on collision
The mangled wreck of the vehicle involved in the traffic fatality this morning.

An early morning collision led to the country’s latest traffic fatality, which claimed the life of woman who police said was the mother of one.

The young woman, believed to be in her 20’s, slammed into a makeshift barricade situated on Munnings Avenue, just off of Gladstone Road.

Police reported that before 6:00 a.m., a nearby security officer working at an unnamed warehouse beyond the barricade, saw the wreckage and reported it.

Chief Superintendent Craig Stubbs told Eyewitness News Online that speed, along with the lack of illumination, played a heavy factor in the fatal collision.

“The fact that the vehicle was able to move those concrete barriers backward, speed and force played an intricate role in the injuries she received,” Stubbs said.

‘We got a report from persons who were employed in that area, that a car would’ve collided in that area … that a car collided in the barriers

“Officers came on the scene and met a female driver who had collided into the barrier head-on.”

Residents of the Munnings Avenue area pointed out that they had a concern with the ‘countless’ amounts of accidents  on that street.

“I live in this area and I have a family, and the speeding is unacceptable,” said one resident.

“What we are trying to do is really move that speeding traffic on to JFK.”

Minister of Works Desmond Bannister told Eyewitness News that there were just over 300 accidents in the same area just last year.

Eyewitness News learned hours following the accident that roadworks had begun in the area.
