UN appoints resident coordinator based in Jamaica

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Dr Garry Conille will serve as the United Nations resident coordinator (UNRC), with residence in Jamaica.

In a virtual meeting held January 28, 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs Darren Henfield received a copy of the letters of appointment from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

In the meeting held after the presentation, both parties acknowledged the effort of the UN to reinforce its presence in The Bahamas through the prospective establishment of a satellite UNRC office, to be headed by a Bahamian.

Henfield reiterated, through Conille, his appreciation to the UN secretary-general on his visit to Abaco in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian and his support on the continuing effect of climate change on Small Island Development States (SIDS).

Both sides agreed that an in-country visit by Conille and his team based in Jamaica would be useful in gaining a deeper appreciation for the realities faced on the ground. The ministry anticipates an in-person visit by the UNRC and the UN team by April 2021.
