FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA — Former Deputy Chief Councillor for the city of Freeport April Crowther-Gow was yesterday hailed as a freedom-fighting community leader who courageously served Grand Bahama.

Crowther-Gow passed away yesterday.

In a statement, Free National Movement leader Michael Pintard described her as a loyal party member who made “incredible sacrifices” to ensure the party’s success and strongly advocated for its foot soldiers who she believed were often overlooked.

Pintard said: “April held a very strong fundamental view that more qualified women should be fully integrated into the leadership of our Party to ensure that our approach to governance reflected a sensitivity to the unique challenges women and children faced daily.

“April was also a fearless and plain-spoken individual, who would passionately articulate her position on various party as well as national issues. She was a well-organized individual, bursting with ideas and always ready to serve in any capacity she was called upon.

He continued: “My admiration for her was largely fueled by her openness and how upfront she was about how she felt and what she thought. These are two rare qualities in Bahamian politics. She contributed substantially to our Party’s success in Grand Bahama and my personal success politically. She was an exceptional organizer and a very hard and smart worker.

“April was a born leader and our party including the Women’s Association as well as our country at large greatly benefited from her years of insight and contribution. April was a consummate business professional, having launched a number of successful businesses over the years.”

According to Pintard, Crowther-Gow also served as a local government practitioner for East Grand Bahama, an Executive of the Grand Bahama Council, a National Protocol Officer, and the former President of the Women’s Association in Grand Bahama.

Crowther-Gow contested and won the position of Deputy Protocol Officer at recently held National Party elections, he said.

Pintard said: “On behalf of my wife Berlice, my parliamentary colleagues, and all members of the Free National Movement, I extend sincere condolences to April’s son and the rest of her family. May God bring you comfort in this difficult time and may she rest in peace and rise in glory.”

Minister for Grand Bahama Ginger Moxey extended heartfelt condolences to the family on behalf of Prime Minister Philip ‘Brave’ Davis and Mrs. Davis, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper and Mrs. Cooper, Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Fred Mitchell, and the officers and members of the party.

“We are grateful for the invaluable contributions April has made to Grand Bahama Island and our nation, as a community-builder, business leader, and former Deputy Chief Councillor of the City of Freeport,” said Moxey.

“April had a vivacious personality, loved Grand Bahama and our Bahamaland, and served courageously. She was a freedom fighter and nationalist at heart and left an indelible mark on many lives.”

She added: “She will never be forgotten.”
