Traffic fatality numbers climb to 16

The country’s traffic fatality count jumped to 16 on Friday after a traffic accident left one man dead and another in hospital.

Police intelligence say that shortly after 9:00pm, a traffic accident occurred at Gibbs Corner and West Avenue involving a Nissan Teanna car and a white Ford F150 truck. Two male passengers who were on the back of the truck were ejected and transported to hospital with serious injuries. One of the men was pronounced dead shortly after. The drivers of both vehicles remained at the scene to assist with the investigation.

Just 48 hours earlier, another two lives were lost in two separate traffic accidents. Two men – Gheal Akeem Brown, 25, of Pride Estates and Sean Roberts, 22, of Wells Avenue, Garden Hills Estates, New Providence – in connection with one of those incidents and other serious matters.

The increasing frequency of traffic incidents in the country have prompted police officials to call for stiffer penalties for drivers who fail to adhere to the rules of the road.

Many people are questioning whether the local laws regarding traffic deaths are strict enough.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to be more aware when traveling.

Investigations are ongoing into this recent incident.
