The Bahamas Expresses Gratitude for Donation from the People’s Republic of China

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, through the Disaster Risk Management Authority (DRM Authority), has received a generous donation of BS $84,664 from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to support ongoing Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts and strengthen the Disaster Emergency Fund.

The donation was formally presented by Her Excellency Yan Jiarong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, during a brief ceremony held today in Nassau.

Accepting the donation on behalf of the Government, the Hon. Leon Lundy, Minister of State with Responsibility for Disaster Risk Management, expressed deep appreciation for China’s continued partnership and generosity.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, I wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for this generous contribution,” said Minister Lundy.

“This donation comes at a critical time, as we continue recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa and strengthen our national Disaster Emergency Fund. It reflects not only the spirit of partnership between our two nations, but also the compassion and solidarity that bind us as members of one global community.”

“China has long been a steadfast friend to The Bahamas,” the Minister continued. “Whether through technical assistance, infrastructure development, or humanitarian support, your Government has consistently demonstrated genuine commitment to our country’s growth and resilience. Today’s donation is another tangible expression of that friendship. We assure you that these funds will be used to assist families and communities most affected by recent storms and to bolster our readiness for future emergencies.”

In her remarks, Ambassador Yan Jiarong reaffirmed her Government’s deep concern for the Bahamian people and underscored China’s recognition of the unique challenges faced by small island nations.

“China is highly concerned about the impact of recent storms on The Bahamas,” Ambassador Yan said. “China deeply understands that the risks facing The Bahamas reflect the special vulnerability of small island states in the era of climate change. China has been actively supporting The Bahamas in enhancing disaster prevention and reduction capacities.”

She noted that over the past three years, China has donated BS $140,000 through the China-Caribbean Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Fund, which was also the mechanism for today’s donation.
