NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) President Belinda Wilson yesterday said that the union is very concerned over the incidents of violence and the overall welfare of teachers and students at the Patrick J Bethel High School following a recent attack on a male student outside the school’s campus.
Wilson said: “I have received the information about the male student being injured outside the school campus yesterday but I have also received reports about fights on the campus. Patrick J Bethel High School Abaco needs special attention and a band-aid approach will not resolve the myriad of problems at the school.
“I have requested a meeting with the Acting Director, the police, the school administrators, the district superintendent, teachers, and other stakeholders to examine and devise a comprehensive plan for Patrick J Bethel High School Abaco.”
Wilson added: “The Bahamas Union of Teachers is concerned about the violence, lack of discipline, Teacher shortages, the weak weak leadership and the overall culture of the school. We have given the Ministry of Education more than enough time to address these issues. Although, I have been informed that there is a plan I await the details.
“The BUT is very concerned about the welfare of the teachers and by extension the students. The school is so unsettled it is difficult for learning to take place. The Bahamas Union of Teachers is Keeping a close eye on Patrick J Bethel High School Abaco.
Police said that they were investigating an altercation that left a male student injured.
The incident occurred around 9am last Thursday.
According to a police report, four female students attacked a male student, resulting in injuries to his body. The male student was taken to the Marsh Harbour Clinic, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
Last month, a 17-year-old student in Abaco was stabbed by another student of the same age while on the playing field. The victim was taken to a local clinic, treated, and later discharged.
