Suspected armed robber shot and killed by police

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A suspected armed robber was shot and killed by police behind a church this morning.

Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash said the man, who is believed to be in his early 20s, pulled a weapon on officers after a foot chase ended behind East Street Gospel Chapel.

The officers were responding to a 911 call from two people who were robbed at gunpoint in separate incidents shortly after 5am.

One person was robbed in the area of Hospital Lane and Rogers Corner and the second in the area of Baillou Hill Road and Rogers Corner.

Cash said officers spoke with both victims, who provided a description of the robber and the direction the suspect took.

“Officers proceeded to that area where they observed an individual fitting the description given by both victims,” Cash said.

“As they engaged the suspect, he ran along several streets which ended up into the Lewis Street and East Street area. There is where the suspect ran across East Street east onto the property. Once the officers engaged suspect behind the building. The suspect pulled a weapon. The officers being in fear of their life, they engaged the suspect, opened fire, [and] fatally shot the suspect.”

After a search of the crime scene, Cash said officers found several items believed to be stolen property, and also recovered an alleged firearm in the man’s possession.

He told media at the scene officers were able to respond quickly due to their strategic placement throughout New Providence.
