NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A local small business consultant said yesterday his organization is seeking a “seat at the table” over revived efforts to establish small business legislation.
Mark A Turnquest, president of the newly formed Small Business Association and Resource Centre (SBARC) told Eyewitness News: “If we didn’t march the government was never going to move the needle on this Small Business Act.
“That’s the only reason they brought it up. Now that they brought it up, we want to be at the table.
“We are an official organization. We want to be next to the Chamber of Commerce, the government and the SBDC.
“Gone are the days when small businesses are not represented the right way. Atlantis is not a small business. We are small businesses.”
Earlier this week, executives of the Access Accelerator Small Business Development Centre said the SBDC is leading a formal consultation on legislation to govern the entity and the small and medium-sized business sector in the country.
Efforts to establish small business legislation were carried out under the former Christie administration, however, those efforts stalled several years ago.
Last month, Turnquest led a small business survival march to highlight the plight of SMEs, which felt their businesses could not survive repeated lockdowns and restrictions.
Turnquest said: “We need a comprehensive health and economic plan to reopen the country. We still don’t have that. We have some variance of it, but we need to go a bit further.”
