Solar power coming to New Providence by early 2027 as major renewable projects advance

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — New Providence residents could begin receiving solar-generated electricity as early as the first quarter of 2027, marking a milestone in The Bahamas’ transition to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.

Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL), in partnership with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) including INTI Corporation Bahamas and Eco Energy Bahamas, is spearheading large-scale solar developments that will feed directly into the island’s power grid. The projects represent a major step toward achieving the government’s goal of generating 30 percent of national electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

INTI President and Chief Executive Officer Owen Bethel confirmed that construction is well underway on the company’s 20-megawatt solar farm at the Baillou Hills Power Plant.

“Our staff and equipment are already on the ground,” Bethel said at INTI’s Youth Energy Forum on October 10, 2025. “We’ve cleared the property and are preparing for site development. Once complete, this solar farm will feed directly into BPL’s grid, helping provide a constant, cleaner, and more reliable power supply to New Providence.”

Eco Energy Bahamas, another IPP collaborating with BPL, is advancing its solar project at Coral Harbour, with completion expected within 16 to 18 months.

“We’re deeply committed to protecting the environment as we build,” said Managing Director Vince Pedican. “Our team is actively replanting endangered species and following Environmental Impact Assessment guidelines to ensure this project contributes to a greener, more sustainable future.”

BPL Chief Executive Officer Toni Seymour explained that the new solar farms will operate alongside Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to strengthen reliability and resilience.

“These solar farms will operate in tandem with BESS—cleaner, more reliable, and resilient energy sources,” Seymour said. “As the solar panels utilize the sun’s radiance during the day, they also charge the BESS, which automatically provides power once the sun sets. This is how we are adding resilient mechanisms to our New Energy Era, and these cleaner sources of energy will also be reflected in lower electricity bills as we rely less on heavy fuel power generation units.”
