SIGNS OF CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL: Operators begin setting up despite still awaiting green light from govt

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Operators of the much-anticipated Christmas Carnival have started laying out equipment and materials for the reopening of the holiday amusement park although they have yet to receive final approvals for opening, Eyewitness News can confirm.

Minister of Health & Wellness Dr Michael Darville.

Minister of Health Dr Michael Darville told reporters outside Cabinet yesterday that while the operators have all of the preliminary applications in place, the committee with purview for the carnival has not made its final decision.

“When our committee makes the final decision on Wednesday, that will determine the [fate] for carnival,” he said.

“I believe they would be successful, so we wait patiently for that report.”

Earlier this month, carnival operators Midways by McCafferty Enterprises announced in a Facebook post that they plan to return to The Bahamas this Christmas.

“Hello, Nassau. We are coming back to The Bahamas this year for our annual Christmas Carnival. We will update you as soon as we have our definite opening date,” the post read.

The popular activity was not allowed to operate last year due to the pandemic and public health risks associated with large gatherings.

Up to December 2020, there were some 7,500 cases of COVID-19 confirmed across the country.

Bahamians and residents alike usually look forward to the carnival rides and games for family fun, as well as the food offerings of cotton candy, candy apples and pizza.

As of Saturday, there were 22,773 COVID-19 cases in the country, of which 290 cases were still active.
