Severe weather expected for the northern Bahamas

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM, Thursday, 8th August 2024.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Berry Islands and adjacent waters.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for New Providence, North Andros, and South Abaco, along with adjacent waters.

At 1:10 PM, lightning detection, radar, and satellite imagery depicted a line of showers with embedded thunderstorms moving northward towards and across the warning areas. These showers and thunderstorms are associated with troughing related to the tropical storm extending across the area.

Some of these showers will be locally heavy, and thunderstorms may be strong to severe at times, causing strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, heavy downpours, hail, and possible waterspout or tornadic activity. Localized flooding is also possible during the passage of these storms.

Boaters in the warning areas should seek safe harbor. Residents in the warning areas should remain indoors and away from windows when conditions worsen. Residents should not seek shelter under trees or in water as these can become lightning conductors.
