Debate on legislation that would allow residents to buy lots at a drastically reduced rate to build homes began in the upper chamber Friday morning.

Attorney General Senator Carl Bethel moved the Acess to the Affordable Homes Act and said that despite criticisms over the programme, it will be a huge benefit for families as it provides many duty-free concessions.

Senators also debated and passed amendments to the Electricity Act, which will allow the financially strapped Bahamas Power & Light (BPL) company to borrow funds to resolve some of its debt as well as help fund the company’s ongoing voluntary separation package (VSEP).

While Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Senator Micahel Darville told the Upper Chamber that he supports the bill, he had concerns about high fuel surcharges that are being passed on to consumers.
