NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Residents of the Sea Breeze constituency came together for a hands-on budgeting workshop designed to help families plan confidently and intentionally for the year ahead.
The SMART Family Initiative – 2026 Budget Planning Meeting, hosted by Sea Breeze Member of Parliament Leslia Miller-Brice on Friday, January 23, 2026 drew a diverse cross-section of the community, from young adults just beginning their financial journeys to seasoned heads of households looking to bring greater structure and discipline to their finances.
Held at New Dimension Ministries on Joe Farrington Road, the meeting opened with welcoming remarks from Miller-Brice, who emphasized her desire for every member of the constituency to experience financial growth and long-term stability. She noted that true progress begins with equipping residents with the tools and mindset needed to make informed decisions.
The evening’s program reflected that philosophy. Rather than a lecture-style seminar, the session was designed as an interactive workshop.
The first presentation came from Sharon Gardiner, who challenged attendees to start their budgeting process with honest self-examination. Gardiner encouraged participants to clearly distinguish between needs and wants, explaining that sustainable financial planning begins with understanding personal habits, priorities, and decision-making patterns. Her remarks set the tone for an evening focused on accountability, clarity, and intentional living.
Building on that foundation, attendees were then guided through a practical budgeting exercise led by Nathaniel Butler of Drewber Solutions Ltd. Each participant received a 2026 Budget Planner and was prompted to begin filling it out during the session, transforming the workshop from discussion into action.
The planner serves as a comprehensive financial tool, featuring income and expense trackers, debt management worksheets, paycheck planning sections, and long-term savings activities, including the envelope saving system. Butler walked participants step by step through each component, explaining how consistent use of these tools could improve financial awareness, reduce stress, and support long-term goals. Throughout the session, participants could be seen actively writing, calculating, and discussing their plans, filling the sanctuary with a strong spirit of community.
Keeping spirits and engagement high, raffle prizes were distributed periodically throughout the evening, adding moments of lighthearted interaction and celebration. The event concluded with the distribution of neatly packaged meals, offered as a gesture of appreciation to residents for investing their time and energy in personal development and financial progress.
Looking ahead, Miller-Brice described the initiative as part of a broader, long-term vision focused on strengthening the country by strengthening individuals and communities. She reiterated her belief that empowering residents with knowledge, systems, and confidence creates ripple effects that extend beyond individual households and into business development, economic resilience, and national growth.
