Rolle makes history as first female sports minister

Members of the local sporting community welcomed the first ever female minister of sports on Monday, as the Cabinet Office of The Bahamas announced that Lanisha Rolle will be taking over from Michael Pintard.

Prior to being named to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Rolle served in the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development.

As for Pintard, the former sports minister has been moved to the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources. He served as sports minister for just a little over a year.

Rolle who doesn’t have an elaborate sports background, inherits the ministry at a time when there are several pressing issues on the table, including athlete subvention policies, the construction of the Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium and the renovation of the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

According to Pintard, the final draft of the overhauled subvention policy was recently completed and just needs to be approved by Cabinet.

Eyewitness News was unable to reach Rolle for comment before this article was published.
