RBPF assures gym not operational after officer found dead

Officer found dead in police gym on Monday

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Authorities have reported the gym at the Police Training College has not been operational after a training officer was found dead inside the facility.

Police reported on Monday that the officer signed in and went to “check the gym”, but a short time later a colleague found him unresponsive.

According to Assistant Superintendent Audley Peters, an autopsy will have to be performed to determine the cause of death.

Peters said he could not disclose any personal information about the officer or any prior illness that may have contributed to his death.

“As a training officer, he has access to every area of the gym,” Peters added.

“…I am not able to say what he was doing.

“The police gym has not been operational because we don’t have anyone in training to make use of the gym and when persons are not in training they don’t have access to the gym.”

Peters insisted that police are not being “hypocritical” in the matter, over the use of gyms on the island.

“Whatever suggestion that may be out there, only the evidence will determine what happened. And it’s only speculative at the moment now as to what’s been going on on social media. The investigation has to be carried out.”

While he announced the relaxation of restrictions on New Providence and Abaco, the prime minister gave no indication as to when gyms may be allowed to reopen.
