Police officer, woman dead in separate weekend traffic fatalities

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A police officer and a 60-year-old woman were killed over the weekend in separate accidents on Acklins and Andros.

The traffic accident involving the police officer took place in Acklins sometime around 3.30pm on Saturday.

According to reports, an officer driving a white-colored police vehicle was traveling north along Kings Highway when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn.

In North Andros, a 60-year-old woman was found unresponsive at the wheel of a pink Nissan Note with extensive damages to the front of the car.

“According to reports, officers were on routine mobile patrol in the area of Lowe Sound, Andros when they observed a pink Nissan Note with extensive damages to the front of the vehicle.” read a police statement.

“Officers also observed damages to a business establishment in the immediate area of the vehicle and subsequently made a check of the vehicle, where they discovered an unresponsive female driver.”

The incident reportedly occurred sometime around 12.35am on Sunday.

In both accidents, medical personnel on the island visited the scene and confirmed no vital signs of life.

A team of officers from the Traffic Division, New Providence will travel to the island to assist with the investigations.
