NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Following what police have labeled as a “suspicious shooting incident” which unfolded in the quiet residential community of Stapledon Gardens on Friday night, authorities are actively looking for a male who is believed to have been involved in that incident which left another man dead.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander, sometime after 9:00 p.m. on Friday, a man armed with a handgun held another man at bay in the yard of an abandoned home on Hampton Street, Stapleton Gardens.
“What we do know at this time is that police officers responded to shots in this area. What we know at this time is that the deceased person involved in this matter was armed with a handgun and had a male held at bay,” he said.
ACP Fernander confirmed that an altercation unfolded between the two men.
At some point during that alternation police say the attacker was stripped of his weapon and subsequently shot by the man he was holding at bay.
The man, after shooting his attacker, fled the scene, according to police.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found the bullet-riddled body of a male lying in a pool of blood.
The man, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds about the body, was pronounced dead on the scene, police confirmed.
“We want to appeal to the public to please come forward to the police. Even the person who was involved in this incident with the deceased person so that we can find out what exactly went wrong,” ACP Fernander said.
While the murder count currently stands at 91, authorities are still confident that murder stats will not hit the triple digits before year’s end.
“The police and I want to ensure the wider public…and will continue to ensure that communities are safe,” he said.
“We are out in great numbers and will continue to do just that to ensure that communities are safe. This is an area which is not known for criminal activities and that is why we are appealing to the public that whatever they can do to assist us with our investigations, we would appreciate it,” Fernander said.
Meanwhile, this latest murder in Stapledon Gardens came just hours after another murder that also occurred on Friday.
According to police reports, shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Friday, police responded to a nightclub on Malcolm Road off East Street, after receiving reports of gunshots being discharged.
Officers discovered that there was an argument on the outside of the club, which escalated, resulting in three men being shot.
The injured men were transported to a hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries.
The other two men are listed in serious, but stable condition.
Police are appealing to members of the public, who may have information that can assist in solving this incident, to contact the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991/2, Crime Stoppers at 328-TIPS (8477) or the nearest police station.
Investigations are ongoing.
