Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis on Sunday defended why the government must step in to salvage the Our Lucaya hotel property in Grand Bahama, despite a wave of concern from various sectors.

Dr. Minnis said the government must help that island that is suffering economically. While he said he agrees that the purchase of the hotel by the government is not the best avenue, he suggested that it is the only option the government has left.

Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar also weighed in on the government’s decision.

While he admitted that the island’s tourism product has had its challenges, D’Aguilar stressed that to allow the hotel to remain dormant would have grave consequences.
