NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Carl Culmer yesterday cried shame on PLP chairman Fred Mitchell, calling recent comments suggesting a need for a forced election is “disgraceful”.
On Thursday, as he was criticizing the recent lockdown measures by the prime minister, Mitchell noted that “given the loss of confidence by the people, the only solution our system allows is to force a general election”.
Culmer, who vehemently disagreed with the comment, said
“It’s quite obvious that the chairman of the PLP is showing the Bahamian people that he has no care or concern for their welfare,” Culmer told Eyewitness News.
“It’s only his main objective to get in power and to be in government. He dont care about him.
“It’s a disgrace wherein Bahamian people are struggling to make ends meet because of a loss of jobs and..loss of family members or knowing someone who has COVID.
“He has no sympathy for his own leader.”
PLP Leader Philip Brave Davis was flown to the United States yesterday dso the he could be close to his daughter, who is a senior critical care physician.
Davis, who tested positive for COVID-19, had been receiving treatment at Doctors Hospital since last Friday.
Culmer noted yesterday Mitchell is always “in combative mode”, speaking about elections and removing the prime minister.
“It doesn’t go well with where we re and where we need to be,” he said.
“Election isn’t until 2022. And this is the kind of that you want to have. He’s heartless and he thinks nothing other than power.”
He urged Bahamians to follow the advice of professionals.
President of the Torchbearers Youth Association Carlyle Bethel also took Mitchell to task over the “ill-thought-out statement calling for a General Election”.
In a statement hitting out at the PLP chairman, Bethel questioned why he would make such a call while Davis is still hospitalized.
“Two things are clear though. The first is that the PLP has flip-flopped constantly during this pandemic and offered not one sensible solution, only criticism…The Torchbearers Youth Association understands the gravity of this situation and knows that people are hurting. Instead of playing politics, we decided to put in place measures to assist people and the government.”
Bethel also accused Mitchell of speaking down to young people, and labeled his actions as toxic behavior which impedes progress in this country.
“I don’t need Fred Mitchell and the PLP to take me seriously,” he added.
“I am taking seriously the needs of Bahamian people who are suffering, and along with others, I’m trying to do something about it.
“So, while you may not take me seriously, Mr. Mitchell, it gives me comfort to know that the Bahamian people don’t take you seriously.”
