ORG gears up for Good Governance Symposium

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Organization for Responsible Governance (ORG) is holding the first Good Governance Symposium in The Bahamas on February 25.

The event will host members of the government, civil society, private sector and students in a day of panels and discussions under the theme “The Culture of Governance in The Bahamas”.

The symposium will be held as a blended event — limited by-invitation in-person attendance and a virtual event for participation by the public at large.

The Good Governance Symposium, funded by the Templeton Religion Trust, is designed to bring together all sectors of The Bahamas to discuss and promote practices and a culture of “good governance” for positive and sustainable national development.

The symposium’s panel discussions will reinforce the eight principles of good governance, including accountability, transparency, rule of law, responsiveness, equity and inclusiveness, effectiveness and efficiency, participation and being consensus-oriented.

The event will feature leaders from across The Bahamas sharing their perspectives on such topics as public service reform, increasing the role of women and youth in governance and citizen participation.

The United States Embassy will be hosting a special panel on anti-corruption strategies, which will feature participation from international experts.

ORG Executive Director Matt Aubry said he is looking forward to the symposium and the dialogue it will inspire.

“In order to develop long-term sustainable solutions [to] long-term governance issues of The Bahamas, we need to bring leaders from government, the private sector [and] academia…together to communicate openly and honestly,” he said.

“The symposium will create opportunities for greater collaboration toward common goals.”

Vanessa Clarke, ORG’s communication coordinator, encourages the public to participate in the virtual event and contribute to the conversation.

“Good governance is really about having a positive impact on citizens’ lives, so we must hear from those that are most affected by policy choices,” she said.

“ORG’s motto is ‘Get Informed and Get Involved’ because citizen participation increases The Bahamas’ capacity to successfully develop.”

The Good Governance Symposium will be live-streamed via Zoom and ORG’s social media pages. The link to register is orgbahamas.com/goodgovernancesymposium.
