One Family, Colors declared unofficial winners of 2022 Boxing Day Junkanoo parade

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The war-ready One Family Junkanoo and Community Organization have emerged from the two-year hiatus as the unofficial victors of the 2022 Boxing Day Junkanoo Parade for the A division.

Under the theme “Empires: Rise of the Warriors, Battle-Tested, War Ready”, One Family went head to head with The Valley Boys and conquered Bay Street on Monday night with a score of 92.73.

The group took home Best Off The Shoulder, Best Choreography, Best Overall Performance, Music, and Best Overall Costume in addition to the overall win.

This is One Family’s third consecutive win in the Best Performance category, with the group taking home those titles in 2018 and 2019.

Yesterday, One Family chairman Christina “Muffin” Fernander expressed gratitude for the group’s overall win despite many setbacks, particularly the Music category. She said the group is now aiming for a repeat win at the New Year’s Day parade.

“The last two years, losing members through COVID the pandemic but we bounced back,” Fernander said.

“We did it for those fallen warriors and soldiers that we lost. We did it for our loved ones, we did it for our group, we did it for our community because we are one family.”

She said: “We have not had that music come home to us in many many years so for us. We’re ecstatic, words cannot describe.”

The 2019 Boxing Day champions, the Valley Boys captivated onlookers with their theme Magnificent Wonders of the Deep, with an overall score of 92.48, and the top category prizes for Best Dancer, Best Step Down, Best Lead Costume, Best Banner, and Shirley Street.

In third place, the Genesis Warhawks scored 88.93 for their theme “A Wonderful Year of Occasions and Celebrations”, and Roots placed fourth with a score of 86.52 for “Heal the World Enduring the Crisis of The Time”.

The Shell Saxon Superstars took fifth place with a score of 84.79 for their theme “In Praise of Nature All Things Give Thanks”. Suffering massive penalties, The Music Makers placed sixth with a score of 30.00.

In the B Division, Colors Junkanoo group took home the win with a score of 84.40, handily defeating Fancy Dancers (78.11) and The Original Congos (76.72).

Conquerors for Christ placed fourth, The Immortals fifth, with Body of Christ and Redland Soldiers taking the sixth and seventh place respectively.

Colors won Best Choreography, Best Performance, Best Music, and Best Overall Costume, while The Immortals won Best Banner.
