NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The President of the North Andros Chamber of Commerce says that the chamber is exploring the possibility of hosting an educational expo to raise awareness and provide guidance on digital payments, assisting residents in transitioning away from traditional banking systems, which have shown signs of decline and may not maintain a presence in the future.
Earlier in February, Scotiabank condemned an act of vandalism that disrupted the operation of its Automated Banking Machine (ABM) in Nicholl’s Town, Andros. The ongoing absence of functional Automated Banking Machines (ABMs) poses significant challenges for businesses in Andros.
Darrin Bethel, President of the North Andros Chamber of Commerce, stated that businesses have been forced to travel to New Providence weekly to fulfill their banking requirements.
Bethel told Eyewitness News: “The ATM remains out of service, and there are discussions regarding a potential acquisition of the building by one of the digital service providers. Scotia, which has operated on a month-to-month basis with the landlord, appears unlikely to continue its presence in Andros. Their primary concern seems to be business deposits, as they continue to collect them without addressing the ATM issue.”
He added: “Island Pay is expected to introduce additional ATMs, while Suncash plans to deploy five in the North and establish a main office by the end of the month. We are exploring the possibility of organizing an Educational Expo in collaboration with digital service providers to facilitate the transition for more residents.”
