Government officials have yet to debate the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) bill that was tabled in September of last year.
National Security Minister, Marvin Dames, reported to Eyewitness News that debate on the bill is expected soon and will be accompanied by other bills aimed at tackling crime.
“All of these things require an act of Parliament, so we have been moving that quite a bit,” he said. “We have been focusing on getting the economy up and running. You should expect to see the bill very shortly.
In the lead up to the 2017 General Election, while in opposition, the Free National Movement pledged to make the bill a priority and blasted the former administration for establishing the security entity without the necessary legislative framework.
“During my meeting with the prime minister, we talked about a time table for the NIA bill. It’s part of a compendium of bills that is expected to move this country in the right direction.”
