Town Planning Committee to be appointed next month
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Works Minister Alfred Sears said yesterday that the country’s building code is being reviewed and updated, noting that while it is considered one of the most robust in the region, Hurricane Dorian has demonstrated that it is not robust enough.
Sears, during his contribution to the 2021/2022 supplementary budget debate yesterday, said: “We are presently engaged in a review and updating of the building code, even though it is regarded as one of the most robust in the region.
“Dorian taught us a lesson — that we are not robust enough, especially in the enforcement.
“The building code is being reviewed, as well as other aspects of the building control section, to ensure that we are current and up to date with what is required with regards to resilience and sustainability in the face of climate change.”
Sears added: “[When] this review of the building code and effective inspectorate regime, including third-party inspection, is completed, we be able to embrace new technology and make new standards of enforcement, compliance and procedures as part of building practice in The Bahamas.”
According to Sears, the Town Planning Committee will be appointed next month.
