NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Under the theme “Somebody Touch Somebody’s Hand, Helping People, Changing Lives” and in keeping with the spirit of Thanksgiving, the Ministry of National Security’s National Neighborhood Watch Council (NNWC) has partnered with a number of churches, corporate sponsors and non-governmental agencies throughout the country to host a National Thanksgiving luncheon, today, Thursday, November 26, 2020, beginning at 10am.
The Ministry of National Security in a statement said yesterday the luncheon will be officially launched from United Faith Ministries, Fire Trail Road, at 8am.
“Thanksgiving meals will be packaged and delivered directly to the homes of thousands of senior citizens, children, the sick and shut-in, in all eleven districts of New Providence, including those in Eleuthera, Abaco and Grand Bahama, by members of the council, the police liaison officers and neighborhood watch officers,” the ministry said. “Due to COVID-19 health protocols, there will be no social gatherings.
“Also partnering in this initiative is Christ the King Anglican Church, Ridgeland Park West, where hundreds of meals are also being prepared by the South Central District Council members for distribution throughout eight of the eleven districts in New Providence.”
Minister of National Security Marvin Dames praised the initiative as “timely” amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“This event is timely as the economy and many people’s lives have been severely affected due to the impact of COVID-19,” he said. “We are living in unprecedented times. This is unchartered territory. I know without a doubt through faith in God that our country will survive this pandemic.
“We have to demonstrate love and concern for people in our community that have fallen on hard times and are less fortunate than ourselves. That is how we are going to build strong communities and a better Bahamas.”
The National Thanksgiving Luncheon is part of the “We Are One” national campaign launched earlier this month, which is geared towards “bringing healing and unity among the Bahamian people in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic”. The campaign is anticipated to run through to December and include “12 days of Christmas” celebrations.
