National tree lighting ceremony ushers in holiday

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Governor General Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling flipped the switch that capped off festivities at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture (MOYSC) National Tree Lighting Ceremony, held in Rawson Square last Thursday.

Her Excellency joined Minister Lanisha Rolle and her Ministry staff members, several Parliamentarians, clergy members, honoured guests, and a large audience of Bahamians and visitors for the festivities that included musical and dance performances, marching bands and a Junkanoo rushout.

Among those present were Minister of Social Services Frankie Campbell; Member of Parliament Mark Humes; President of the Senate, Katherine Forbes-Smith; Senator Jamal Moss, MOYSC Acting Permanent Secretary Rhoda Jackson; Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary K. Darron Turnquest; Executive Director of Culture Rowena Poitier-Sutherland, Director of Sports Timothy Munnings and Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Her Excellency Ismara Mercedes Vargas Walter.
