National Insurance Board’s 50-year journey comes to life in new documentary premiere

Nassau, Bahamas – The National Insurance Board (NIB) celebrated its 50th anniversary with the premiere of its documentary, “Reflecting the Past, Building the Present, Securing the Future,” on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Atlantis Resort Theatre, Paradise Island.

The event was attended by Governor General Her Excellency Dame Cynthia Pratt, Prime Minister The Hon. Philip Davis, KC, MP, distinguished government officials, former leaders, board members, NIB executives, contributors, and invited guests. The documentary, which was produced by The Counsellors Ltd was warmly received with applause and even laughter throughout the screening, traces NIB’s history from its founding in 1974 to its evolution into a cornerstone of The Bahamas’ social safety net, highlighting its resilience, innovation, and lasting impact on Bahamian society.

Dr. Tami Francis, Director of NIB, reflected on the milestone, noting the importance of celebrating an institution that has shaped the lives of generations of Bahamians.

“We celebrate 50 years of an institution woven into the very fabric of our nation. The documentary tells a story not just of programs and policies, but of the people whose vision, dedication, and resilience have built and sustained NIB. It captures our journey and inspires us to continue ensuring this institution remains strong and responsive for generations to come.”

She emphasized that the film placed NIB front and center, illustrating its crucial role in supporting Bahamians during sickness, unemployment, maternity, and retirement, and she stressed the importance of reaching a wider audience.

“We look forward to expanding the viewing of this documentary across the entire Bahamas so that all citizens can experience the pride, energy, and confidence that National Insurance will always be there when needed. It is a story of every Bahamian, for every Bahamian, and it belongs to all of us.”

Hon. Alfred Sears KC, Minister responsible for NIB, praised the documentary’s depth and historical accuracy.

“The documentary is engaging, informative, and historically rich. It is a multimedia presentation that combines narration, photographs, and graphics to tell the incredible story of 50-plus years of NIB. We see interviews with those who built, managed, and guided this institution, including political leaders and retirees, whose voices bring authenticity and depth to the narrative. This is a story of innovation, service, and responsiveness that demonstrates the best of Bahamians and provides a model of excellence globally.”

Minister Sears also highlighted NIB’s pivotal role during national crises:
“During Hurricane Dorian and the COVID-19 pandemic, NIB was the only institution capable of reaching every family in the archipelago. It disbursed $105 million to over 44,000 Bahamians and facilitated an additional $155 million from the government to those not eligible for unemployment benefits. Here is a Bahamian institution responding to unprecedented challenges with grace, efficiency, and care.”

He further recognized the dedication of staff who worked tirelessly during these crises and emphasized the importance of strategic reforms to ensure sustainability.

“The hard decisions taken—raising contribution rates, appointing leadership through competitive searches, and enhancing compliance tools—have strengthened NIB for future generations. This documentary celebrates both the pioneers and the ongoing vision that secures our nation’s social safety net, showing the depth of commitment required to protect our people in times of need.”

Jason Moxey, who served over 34 years at NIB, retiring as Senior Deputy Director of Operations, and now contributes as a Board member and Consultant for Public Relations and Training, reflected on the institution’s evolution:

“The documentary captures NIB’s development over 51 years, showing how it has adapted to meet Bahamians’ needs. From providing security during sickness, unemployment, or retirement, the institution has evolved to deliver improved service and ensure stability for those who rely on it. It truly makes a difference in people’s lives, and it is important that we honor both the pioneers and current leaders who sustain this legacy.”

Philip McKenzie KC, Chairman of NIB, emphasized the board’s living legacy:
“This documentary allows us to reflect on the first 50 years, honor those who contributed to NIB, and appreciate the board’s achievements. It reminds us of the board’s mission, the dedication of its staff, and the importance of sustaining this institution for generations to come. NIB is more than a provider; it is a foundation for the future.”

Derek Osborne, former NIB actuary, highlighted the significance of remembering the institution’s origins.

“The first 50 years is an achievement, but the next 50 will be more challenging. This documentary reminds us of the vision, hard work, and resilience of those who built NIB, setting the stage for continued protection and support for Bahamians. By learning from our history, we are prepared to meet future challenges and continue this vital service.”
