NAD surpasses pre-pandemic passenger numbers, achieves record 4.06M passengers in FY2024

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) surpassed its pre-pandemic airlift numbers during its 2024 fiscal year with a record 4.06 million passengers.

The first month of its new fiscal year also showed strong performance, with total passengers traveling through Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in July increasing by nearly three percent.

In fiscal 2024, passenger numbers increased by 9.27 percent YOY across all sectors: U.S., International and Domestic. A total of 2,863,556 million U.S., 449,988 International, and 747,388 Domestic passengers were recorded. This consistent pandemic recovery began in FY2022 with 2.8 million passengers across all three sectors and continued in FY2023 with 3.7 million. Officials at Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) attribute the success to strategic efforts and collaboration with industry partners.

Vernice Walkine, President and CEO of NAD, highlighted the success in FY2024, noting: “This achievement is largely due to our partners who worked closely with us to secure the additional airlift we needed and to ensure we could accommodate it at the airport. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism conducted several missions to various markets, and the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board (NPIPB) aggressively pursued opportunities with different airlines. Through these combined efforts, we’ve attracted additional airlift from new gateways and increased seat availability from traditional markets.”

July, the first month of FY2025, saw strong results, with 412,234 total passengers passing through LPIA, a 2.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. NAD anticipates similar trends in August. As passenger numbers continue to rise, airport stakeholders are committed to enhancing connectivity, improving the overall guest experience, and sustaining growth at the country’s main gateway.

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation, Chester Cooper, congratulated NAD and the entire LPIA team for achieving a record-breaking 4.06 million passengers in FY2024, surpassing the pre-pandemic record set in 2019.

“This outstanding achievement is a direct result of our strategic efforts and collaboration with industry partners to meet the growing demand for travel to our beautiful Bahamas. LPIA’s ability to adapt and thrive in the post-pandemic environment has demonstrated the flexibility and resilience of our nation’s main gateway and tourism sector. The increase in seat capacity and the expansion of airlift from new and traditional markets show that we are growing and expanding our brand, which is paradise,” said Cooper.

He added, “This growth in stopover arrivals comes as we continue to expand our room inventory through domestic and foreign investments. While we celebrate this milestone, our work continues. I’m excited to reaffirm our government’s commitment to making further significant investments in LPIA and throughout our tourism sector to meet the continued demand.”
