MYSC congratulates The Bahamas’ Men’s National Basketball Team

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Minister of Youth, Sports & Culture Mario Bowleg has extended congratulations to the county’s Men’s National Basketball Team for their stellar performance in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament; while the team did not secure a win in their battle against Spain on Sunday, their ascension to that level within the competition was a historic placement for The Bahamas.

Bowleg, in a press statement issued Monday morning, said, “On behalf of the proud citizens of The Bahamas, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Team Bahamas for their exceptional performance in the Olympic qualifying tournament, particularly in their hard-fought match against the second most winningest team in the world, Spain.”

“As we approach our 51st anniversary of Independence, we stand united in celebrating this historic achievement by our men’s national basketball team. This tournament marks the first time Team Bahamas has graced such a prestigious stage, securing victories over formidable opponents like Argentina, Finland, and Poland, and demonstrating unwavering determination and skill that defied all expectations.”

The statement continued, “As Minister of Sports and the former President of the Bahamas Basketball Federation, I am overwhelmed with pride witnessing the incredible journey and triumph of Team Bahamas. With a blend of youthful vigour and experienced leadership, the future shines brightly for Team Bahamas. Their performance shocked the world and delivered a resounding message to the global basketball fraternity, that The Bahamas stands among the elite.”

The minister acknowledged that the road to Paris presented daunting challenges, “yet fueled by sheer national pride and unwavering perseverance, Team Bahamas achieved what many thought impossible. Their advancement to the finals of the Olympic qualifying tournament highlights the exceptional talent, determination, hard work, and unshakeable belief in their abilities have propelled them to remarkable success. They were united in love and service for country.”

The statement continued, “The Government of The Bahamas remains steadfast in its support, committed to investing in our sports programs and facilities to ensure sustained success and development.”

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the players, coaches, Bahamas Basketball Federation, and Bahamas Olympic Committee for their tireless dedication and unwavering support. Together, they have showcased to the world the essence of ‘242’—a nation of strength, unity, and unwavering resolve.”
