NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Travaughn Nichols led five UB Mingoes in double figures in the 85-80 win over the Caro Contractors Pirates in New Providence Basketball Association action Monday night at The A.F. Adderley gym.
The Mingoes move to 5-0 in division one of the league and are tied with The Commonwealth Bank Giants as the only undefeated team in the division. The Pirates fall to 2-4.
Nichols scored 17 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 steals for the Mingoes. Rashad Sturrup was the only Mingoe with a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Justin Smith scored 13 points with 7 assists; Tyrone Sands put up 12 points and Kemsy Sylvestre scored 10.
The Pros took the early lead at 4-11 at the 5:39 mark in the first quarter. After a quick time out The Mingoes went on an 15-0 run to go up 19-11 with 3:09 to go in the first quarter. The Mingoes never gave back the lead and lead the game by as much as 18 points.
“We were able to execute the system and trust the system early in the game,” UB head coach Bacchus Rolle said.
Nichols, who came off the bench Monday night, said the team needs to stay focused in the last part of the game.
“We need to learn to how to close out games in the fourth quarter,” he said. “We almost let them get back in the game and that can’t happen.”
Smith agreed with Nichols and said they need to respond better especially in the closing moments of the game.
“They started to get physical with us and we didn’t respond to the pressure,” he said. “We made free-throws that were able to capitalize on and that helped us to win the game.”
For The Pirates, Dominique Fernander scored 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds to lead his side. Christorr Stuart also contributed 18 points and Kronoff Dean had 15 in a losing effort.
The Mingoes next play 8:30pm Wednesday November 19, 2018 at The A.F. Adderley gym against the Discount Distributor Rockets.
