Miller confident of PLP nod for Golden Isles, but Davis maintains no guarantees

PLP leader: “We are still deliberating what will happen”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — While newly minted Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) MP Vaughn Miller last night expressed confidence of a nomination from the party to run as the incumbent in Golden Isles, PLP Leader Philip Brave Davis maintained that “it is not guaranteed”.

Miller, who was elected on the Free National Movement’s ticket, resigned from the FNM in December 2019.

He announced last week in Parliament that he had joined the PLP.

When asked last night for his expectation as it relates to the seat, Miller said: “As you stated, I am the incumbent.

“I have been in conversations since that statement came out, I have been in conversations and I am satisfied that I will be in Golden Isles.

“I will work hard and our teams will be on the ground soon and we have every intention of recapturing that seat for the Progressive Liberal Party.”

He made the statement on the sidelines of a ‘Service of Thanksgiving’ meeting to recognize Davis’ return following his recovery from COVID-19 and to introduce the new PLP member to supporters.

Asked if he had received former Golden Island MP Michael Halkitis’ blessing to vie for the seat, Miller said: “Absolutely. We met before. We were in a meeting together and that conversation has taken place and I am satisfied going forward that will not be a problem.”

In a separate interview last night, Davis was asked whether the incumbent would receive the nod for the seat.

“We are still deliberating what will happen,” Davis said.

“As you would note, at the moment he is a sitting MP as a PLP in the House of Assembly.

“Michael Halkitis has been a very strong contributing member of our team and no doubt there will be something; we will be working those issues out as time evolves.

“The candidates’ committee is actively meeting and discussing issues, concerning candidates, all of the constituencies, and this will be one that will be discussed in due course.”

Asked whether Miller as the incumbent would automatically get the nomination, Davis said: “It’s not guaranteed”.

Asked for his prediction at the polls come the next general election, he said: “We expect to win and win big.”
