Man charged with prison officer’s murder

A man was charged in the Magistrate’s court yesterday for the shooting death of a prison officer back on June 12.

Rodman Knowles, 20, alias “Double,” appeared before Magistrate Carolyn Evans and was not required to enter a plea to the murder charge of Bernard Ancestor, and the attempted murder charge of Tomiko Major on the same date.

Ancestor was found with multiple gunshot wounds in his home on Abner Street, Fox Hill. Major was rushed to the hospital and treated for gunshot injuries.

In court yesterday, Knowles’ attorney, Barry Sawyer expressed concern about his safety. He told the court that his client was shot several months ago and those believed to be responsible for the shooting are currently serving time behind bars.

As the victim is also a prison officer, Sawyer said his client might be targeted.

Magistrate Evans responded to Sawyer’s request and ordered that Knowles be placed in isolation while remanded at the Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDOC).

He returns to court December 5 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment or a preliminary inquiry. Knowles can apply for bail in the Supreme Court.
