Major brain and tumor surgery marks historical surgical intervention at Rand Memorial Hospital

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The second historic surgical intervention was performed at Rand Memorial Hospital (RMH) on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

The procedure, which involved the removal of a brain tumor from a 70-year-old woman, marked the first such intervention for Grand Bahama Health Services and, by extension, the island of Grand Bahama.

Professor Dr Magnus Ekedede, consultant and chief of neurosurgery at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and Doctors Hospital, led the historic neurosurgical procedure.

He was assisted by teams from PMH and Rand Memorial Hospital.

Ekedede acknowledged the support of the prime minister and the minister of health, in addition to the management team at Grand Bahama Health Services, in facilitating the process to make the surgery possible.

He described the opportunity as a fact-finding mission and said it will play an important role in the accomplishment of future cases.

Dr Freeman Lockhart, medical chief of staff, Grand Bahama Health Services, said it was necessary to take the approach of having a visiting surgeon perform the surgery as PMH was challenged as far availability of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds.

Lockhart said he looked forward to continued collaboration between Rand Memorial Hospital and PMH in the delivery of quality healthcare.

This surgery follows a recent complex open reduction thoracic spine fracture procedure that was performed at Rand Memorial Hospital on October 8, 2021.
