Lynden Pindling International Airport prepares for peak holiday travel

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- As the holiday season ramps up, Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is anticipating one of the busiest travel windows of the year. With passenger volumes nearing operational capacity, airport stakeholders have activated a comprehensive holiday operations plan to manage the increased flow of passengers, baggage, and aircraft.

The peak travel days are expected to be Friday, December 19, and Saturday, December 20, with projected passenger numbers of 6,700 and 7,600, respectively. These high volumes will continue through December 24, with another surge expected near the end of the year. To accommodate this uptick in activity, all key airport partners are stepping up staffing levels across critical processing areas, ensuring that the terminals remain operationally efficient and passenger movement is smooth.

In particular, vehicular congestion will be at its peak from Friday, December 19, through Wednesday, December 24. Additional security support will be in place during this time to manage the flow of traffic and ensure safety. The public is strongly encouraged to plan ahead, arrive early—at least three hours before US-bound flights and two hours for international or domestic flights—and to be patient as they navigate the airport’s busy facilities.

To facilitate the smooth flow of traffic around the terminal, passengers picking up arriving guests should use LPIA’s free cell phone waiting lot or paid parking facilities, particularly if they need to leave their vehicle. Unattended vehicles left on the curbside will be towed to maintain safety and prevent traffic blockages. Airport parking lots may also fill quickly, so visitors are advised to monitor LPIA’s website and social media channels for real-time updates on availability.

LPIA is fast approaching the 19-year mark since the start of its redevelopment process, with terminal facilities now nearing 15 years of operation. This period of sustained growth highlights the increasing demand for additional capacity to support future travel needs, improve the passenger experience, and ensure continued operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, the need for expansion is clear, as LPIA continues to play a critical role in supporting tourism and bolstering economic growth throughout The Bahamas. We extend our sincere thanks to the airport’s dedicated team and partners for their ongoing commitment to ensuring safe and efficient operations, particularly during this high-demand holiday season.
