NASSAU, Bahamas — On behalf of the local Jewish community, Rabbi Sholom Bluming of the Chabad of the Bahamas (a Jewish centre), presented to Mrs. Patricia Minnis, wife of the Prime Minister, and Khrystle Rutherford-Ferguson, Chairman of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation (BCCEC), a $10,000 cheque that will go towards the BCCEC’s-led #fitforschool initiative.
Mrs. Minnis, who is the patron of the initiative, expressed her appreciation for the donation that will go towards uniforms for students, displaced by Hurricane Dorian who are now residing in New Providence, to attend school. The presentation which took place at the Office of the Spouse, November 1, 2019.
The cheque presentation was just one of the many acts of charity provided by both the local and international Jewish community in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
Rabbi Bluming himself travelled to Grand Bahama and helped procure water and other supplies for those impacted by the Hurricane on the island.
Further, the Israeli Government, in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has donated water purification equipment to the island of Grand Bahama, which will provide residents with potable drinking water.
The Rabbi noted that the Jewish Community will continue to be there to help in the rebuilding process.
The #fitforschool initiative was created with the intention of sourcing and equipping students displaced by Hurricane Dorian with essential items as they return to school. These items include textbooks, uniforms, and footwear.
The BCCEC has partnered with a number of influential women in the business sector, as well as philanthropists, who have agreed to assist in the sourcing of funding. This is the first of many donations expected to be received.
Also on hand for the presentation was Diane Phillips & Associates President, Diane Phillips, who helped the Rabbi choose a cause to donate to in the aftermath of the Hurricane and Camille Lady Barnett, who has partnered with the BCCEC’s initiative.
