Letters to the Editor: Urgent need for enforcement of traffic laws

Dear Editor,

As road fatalities continue to rise at an alarming rate in our country, it is high time that we take urgent and comprehensive action to address this national crisis. The loss of lives due to reckless driving, vehicular manslaughter, and general road law violations has reached an all-time high, and the current Road Traffic Act is proving inadequate in deterring these dangerous behaviors.

The devastating frequency of fatal accidents demands a critical revision of the Road Traffic Act, with an emphasis on introducing much harsher penalties for those who engage in reckless driving and cause the death or injury of others. Reckless drivers must face penalties that reflect the gravity of their actions, including longer prison sentences for vehicular manslaughter, higher fines, and mandatory driving bans for repeat offenders. The intent is not simply punitive but preventative—to create a culture where dangerous driving is recognized as a serious threat to public safety.

In addition to legal reforms, the importance of a strong police presence on our streets cannot be overstated. Traffic police officers are key in curbing speeding, drunk driving, and other violations that lead to these avoidable tragedies. By increasing the visibility and presence of traffic officers, we can deter potential violators and ensure that road laws are enforced consistently and fairly. Speed cameras and other automated enforcement tools should be installed on high-risk roads to complement police patrols, ensuring that speed limits and traffic rules are followed.

Moreover, there is an urgent need for public awareness campaigns that address road safety issues. Educating drivers, particularly new and young drivers, about the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations is essential to instill responsible driving behaviors.

I wish to address the Honorable Minister responsible for Road Traffic directly. Hon. Minister, the increasing number of road deaths is of grave concern to all of us. Families are being shattered, and communities are mourning loved ones lost to senseless acts on the road. The time for action is now. Strengthening traffic laws and enhancing enforcement can no longer be delayed.

Road safety is essential for preserving lives, preventing accidents, and maintaining safe and accessible roads for everyone.

I call on you and all stakeholders to make the necessary legislative reforms and allocate resources to protect the lives of our citizens. We cannot afford to let our roads become sites of tragedy.
