Johnson, Lemieux fight put off

Boxer Tureano Johnson was once again denied a return to the ring.

After being inactive for just over one year, Johnson was set to fight Canadian David Lemieux on Saturday night on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Rocky Fielding undercard. However, the fight was put off after Lemieux was pulled prior to last Friday’s weigh-in after suffering from reported severe dehydration. He was later taken to a local hospital.

“Due to health concerns, David Lemieux was taken to the hospital for evaluation,” Lemieux’s manager Camille Estephan said through a Golden Boy Promotions press release. “He was considerably weakened by the process of making weight. There were concerns regarding his vital signs and was immediately taken to the hospital to be in the hands of medical staff.”

Johnson, 34, said he was in a good place ahead of the fight and was ready begin his climb back up the division ladder.

“They (Team Lemieux) asked if we couldn’t make weight we could bump up to two more pounds. But we’re good with our weight. So, I told them we were good. Friday morning at the weigh-in I found out that he was in the hospital,” Johnson said.

“Learning about it was not a good feeling at all.”
