NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Jay Fitness family recently made a donation to The Bahamas Kidney Association with proceeds raised from the 5K Jay Way Fun Run/Walk.

It’s a cause close to the company’s heart as a member of the Jay Fitness family has donated a kidney to someone who desperately needed it.

Ashanta Gibson, Sharon Kelly and Keisha Russell enjoyed participating in an event where everyone went home with a medal.

They went through the surgery, recovered, and got right back into their fitness lifestyle.

While the donor and recipient remain anonymous, the gesture has set an example that others can follow. The thought of donating a kidney may be harrowing, but it was found to be rewarding and normal life can still be led afterward.

Nearly 200 people participated in a 5-kilometer obstacle course that brought a unique twist to the community event on June 25. In a bid to redefine the traditional event, the course proved to be an exciting adventure for participants that included a steep hill trek, staircase, burpees, javelin throw, and sandbag carry among other activities.

Organizer Donovan “Jay” Rolle said he chose St. Augustine’s College, his Alma Mater as the location for the 5K the Jay Way Fun Run/ Walk.

Mackey Williams raises a hand of victory as he won the male walker prize at the 5K the Jay Way Fun Run/ Walk.

“The school allows participants more freedom without road traffic, and the terrain of the campus added another level of complexity,” said Rolle.

“We wanted something different from the regular 5k – something fun with a little challenge. It breaks up the monotony of other road races that just go up one way and back. Hence we have ‘surprises’ on the route. It was important for us to make sure that the novice runner found it entertaining and the more seasoned runner found it challenging. We ensured that regardless of the fit level, the event was one that every member of the family could enjoy.”

Javelin throwing on the SAC field was among the activities for participants.

Rolle recently presented a plaque to the platinum sponsor, Subway, for an event that allowed them to get fit, give back to a worthy cause, and show the world how important it is to help save lives, – like donating a kidney.

The winners included: Mackey Williams, male walker; Liesl Hanna, female walker; Dexter Adderley, male runner; Eve Dorsette, female walker; Khyda Hanna, youth walker; and youth runner Denaja Minus.
