IL Cares Foundation donates computers to govt. schools

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The IL Cares Foundation donated 24 computers to two local government schools on Wednesday; the Sybil Strachan and Ridgeland Primary Schools.

Faculty members at both schools told Eyewitness News Online that they were very grateful for the donation.

“Here we are in this tech-savvy world where our students use the computers all the time, so this is definitely going to help with our reading program and improve our students reading comprehension,” said Doreen Murray, Vice Principal of Ridgeland Primary.

“We are very grateful. This means the world to us because this is a resource lab and so we can cater to the students as well as teachers and they can peruse the internet quickly and easily because of the new technology we would’ve gotten,” said Dr. Shenique Cooper, a Computer teacher at Sybil Strachan Primary.

Yesterday’s donation arrived just in time for Ridgeland Primary’s 50th Anniversary, which according to Tech Coach, Marcia Saunders, is geared towards broadening students’ horizon through technology.

“All the events we are having and the funds that we gained from it is geared toward creating a 21st-century computer lab, so we are hoping that Corporate Bahamas can get on board.”

Youth Ambassador for IL Cares, Nyla Bastian referred to yesterday’s donation as a rewarding experience.

“Just to be able to help others, I’m also helping myself as well. It gives these students the opportunity to touch-up their math skills, reading skills, language skills [and] typing skills as they may not have these tools at home,” Bastian said.

“It gives them the opportunity to explore what the world is coming to, which is social media and technology, so it gives them a chance to touch on that and learn about that in many different ways while they’re at school as well.”

Bastian added that she is looking forward to more giveaways that will help to impact the students’ lives positively, one day at a time.
