Haitian woman awaiting deportation found dead in police custody

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 51-year-old Haitian woman was found dead in a custody suite at Grand Bahama’s Central Police Station on Friday.

Superintendent Shanta Knowles said the woman had been arraigned and convicted before the Magistrate Court in Freeport on the Immigration Act, and was awaiting deportation.

Knowles said the woman was found shortly after 6pm on Friday.

“EMS Personnel transported the female to the Rand Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead by doctor,” she said.

“Foul play is not suspected in this matter. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.”
