Gym operators eyeing rebound, though the business remains slow

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — After being out of operations for months due to government-imposed COVID-19 restrictions local gyms operators say it will take some time to overcome the financial losses.

Dr Kent Bazard, owner/operator of Empire Fitness said that while gyms have now been allowed to reopen, the business remains slow.

“Things have been slow as persons still have concerns,” Bazard said.

“We know this is going to be a process getting back to normal and recovering everything that was lost. We are thankful to be back in business and we are just looking to get back to where we were before we closed. There are still challenges that we have to overcome.”

Last week, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said while leading the debate on extending the COVID-19 emergency powers for a further month to end-October 2020, said gyms across the country have permission to re-open provided the necessary health and safety protocols were in place.

Bazard said: “I truly believe that making Bahamians healthy is one of the best ways to fight COVID. I think it is important for gyms and fitness centers to be involved in the process.”

He added: “We were able to engage most of our staff and we have the necessary protocols in place. We are looking back to getting into full operations. As I have always said that was a standard operation for us. The only thing was taking temperatures and ensuring people maintain social distancing. Everything else was standard.”
