Golden Yolk egg production set to begin by third quarter, says Sweeting

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Agriculture and Marine Resources Minister Clay Sweeting says egg production under the Golden Yolk project is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Sweeting noted that “the Golden Yolk project—all buildings from A to E—are under construction,” noting that the foundation work was being poured on Wednesday. “We anticipate that once the infrastructural aspect is completed, the Ministry of Agriculture will take carriage, and you will see eggs in the third quarter of this year branded by the Golden Yolk here in-country,” he said.

Launched in February 2023, the Golden Yolk initiative is designed to improve food security, reduce dependency on imports, support local farmers, and create new jobs. The project comes amid ongoing concerns about high egg prices and inconsistent availability in Bahamian grocery stores.

The initiative operates through a public-private model in which a special purpose vehicle (SPV) provides infrastructure, laying hens, veterinary services, and other resources to contracted farmers. The farmers manage daily operations and sell the eggs back to the SPV, which then distributes them to wholesalers across the country.

Once fully implemented, the project aims to increase national egg production from roughly 700,000 to 28 million eggs per year.
