First American woman cruise ship captain connects with Bahamian maritime students

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — On Sunday, September 12, Captain Kate McCue of Celebrity Cruises joined her female officers — Chief Officer Rachel from the UK, Second Officer Mairi from Greece and Second Officer Liz from Kenya — in encouraging female students from LJM Maritime Academy and woman marines from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) to “seas the day” as they consider their career options in the maritime industry.

Captain McCue was the first American woman to take the helm of a megaton cruise ship.

She was appointed to master by the cruise industry’s first female president and CEO, Lisa Lutoff Perlo, in 2015 after many successful years of working her way through the ranks from apprentice officer to master mariner.

Her interest in going to sea began after taking an exciting four-day cruise to The Bahamas with her family at 12 years old.

This industry role model and social media celebrity with over 300,000 Instagram followers shared her career path and offered the students and marines sound advice as they plan their futures.

She said: “Surround yourself with supportive people, but also with diversity because you bring something to the table that no one else will be able to bring, and you make everyone better because of it.”
