NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A Cabinet Minister revealed yesterday that a US carrier was on the verge of pulling out of Governor’s Harbour if expedited upgrades to the airport had not been initiated.
He also disclosed the existence of a Cabinet Paper addressing airports in need of upgrades across the country.
Clay Sweeting, the Works Minister and Central and South Eleuthera MP, when asked about the Rock Sound airport during the Eleuthera Business Outlook, stated: “Rock Sound does require some upgrades. My primary concern is the runway. We’ve already had it assessed and received a quote for the necessary runway improvements. We have three international airports in Eleuthera, and at one point, there was consideration to close one and integrate it into another.”
He continued: “At Cabinet this week, we had a Cabinet Paper that spoke about the development and which ones development.”
Regarding the Governor’s Harbour airport, Sweeting noted: “When I became the Minister of Works they called me and they told me that American Airlines said that if the airport wasn’t done by January 27th they would pull out. If that wasn’t done by January 27th American Airlines to Governors’ Harbour three flights a week would not have happened,” said Sweeting.
“We will also undertake upgrades to Rock Sound airport. However, I cannot commit to upgrading it to the same standard as Governor’s Harbour unless we secure a commitment from an airline,” he added.
