Epsilon strengthens into Category 1 hurricane, no threat to The Bahamas

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Epsilon strengthened into a hurricane on Monday night in the central Atlantic.

The Category 1 hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

It is expected to remain a Category 1 as it makes its closest approach to Bermuda late Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Meteorologists forecast Epsilon to travel toward Bermuda by tomorrow causing large swells and life-threatening surf and rip current conditions for the island.

“While it is too soon to determine the exact details of Epsilon’s track and intensity near the island, tropical storm conditions are possible on Bermuda beginning Thursday with dangerous surf conditions also likely,” the center said.

Based on its track, Epsilon does not represent a threat to any other Caribbean island, including The Bahamas.

The system upgraded from depression to a tropical storm Tuesday.

As of 11pm Monday, the storm was around 545 miles east-southeast of Bermuda.

It was moving around 13 miles per hour and expected to move northward before turning west-northwestward on Wednesday and Thursday.
