NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The government must treat the issuance of Crown land grants, particularly as it relates to the Family Islands, with the “urgency and respect” it deserves, East Grand Bahama MP Peter Turnquest said yesterday.
Speaking briefly on the issue of Crown land grants in the House of Assembly, Turnquest, the former deputy prime minister and former minister of finance, said: “I think sometimes we tend to downplay or may not understand the importance of Crown land when it comes to the Family Islands. It is an empowerment tool for the Family Islands.”
He added: “Land is a significant issue in this country. We all know that we need land reform. We all know that we need to modernize the land registry. We all know that we need to get rid of the Quieting of Titles Act or amend it.
“I want to just remind the government of its commitment to the Bahamian people.”
Turnquest said: “It is important for ownership — ownership in the Family Islands and economic development in the Family Islands. A lot of these persons are applying for Crown land to engage in commercial activity that would benefit their community.”
