Eleuthera Chamber of Commerce President urges viable, sustainable solutions for water crisis

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The President of the Eleuthera Chamber of Commerce called yesterday for immediate action to resolve ongoing water issues affecting South and Central Eleuthera with sustainable solutions.

“We urgently need viable and sustainable solutions. This situation cannot be allowed to continue,” said Thomas Sands, President of the Eleuthera Chamber of Commerce, told Eyewitness News regarding recent water shortages impacting residents in South and Central Eleuthera.

The situation prompted a stern response from the government over the weekend towards Aqua Design Bahamas Ltd, the company responsible for the critical service. Central and South Eleuthera MP Clay Sweeting and State Minister Leon Lundy, expressed disappointment and frustration in a joint statement on Saturday over the reduced water supply. They stated, “The level of service provided by Aqua Design Bahamas Limited is unacceptable and does not meet the standards we expect in The Bahamas.” They also criticized the company for an equipment failure at the reverse osmosis desalination plant and subsequent delays in repairs, labeling it a significant service delivery lapse. They warned that if conditions do not improve, the government may terminate its contract with Aqua Design Bahamas.

The Water and Sewerage Corporation in an update regarding the reduction in service levels across Central Eleuthera, spanning from Gregory Town in the north to Savannah Sound in the south, reported that both desalination units at the Naval Base Desalination Plant are now operational.

“Repair works are being closely monitored to ensure they meet required performance standards. As storage levels increase, residents should see improvements in their water supply this afternoon and evening,” the statement read.

The Corporation also noted ongoing efforts to provide free water tankering to higher elevation locations and remote areas experiencing prolonged water pressure issues. Additionally, teams are distributing free 1-gallon and 5-gallon bottles of water to senior citizens and those unable to collect supplies themselves.
