Duo arrested for firearm possession

Two men are behind bars this morning after they were found in possession of an illegal firearm late last night, police said.

Officers of the Mobile Division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) said they were routinely patrolling East Street south near Independence Highway, when they observed the men in a Nissan Cube, traveling at a high speed.

Officers said they stopped the vehicle and conducted a search of the two occupants and the car’s interior and recovered a Smith & Wesson nine millimeter pistol, with six rounds of ammunition.

Police said the men were immediately arrested and are expected to face formal charges some time this week.

The men face could face two separate charges of firearm and ammunition possession with both charges carrying a five to 10 year prison sentence, if convicted.
