Dr Robert Blaine III selected as new University of the Bahamas President

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The University of The Bahamas has officially named Dr. Robert Blaine III as its new president, following a months-long selection process. Dr. Blaine, who brings a wealth of leadership experience, currently serves as Senior Executive & Director of the Centre for LEAD and the Centre for Municipal Practice at the National League of Cities. His expertise in strategic planning, economic development, and SACSCOC accreditation will be pivotal as he leads the University into its next chapter.

Dr. Blaine’s appointment marks a historic moment for the institution, as he becomes the University’s fourth president and the thirteenth leader overall. His selection follows a rigorous recruitment phase, which included evaluating over 90 candidates and identifying three finalists. Among the finalists was Dr. Maria Woodside-Oriakhi, a UB alumna with more than 25 years of academic experience, and Dr. Leroy Hamilton Jr., a seasoned higher education leader with over 30 years in the field. Dr. Woodside-Oriakhi, the only Bahamian finalist, played an important role in the process.

The University’s recruitment efforts were described as extensive, involving national and international outreach. The search process was thorough, ensuring the best candidate to lead the institution forward.

Acting President Janyne Hodder will continue in her role until June, assisting with the transition.
