NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Doctors Hospital Health System (DHHS) has officially launched its first Emergency Air Ambulance Service, marking a significant advancement in emergency medical care and inter-island patient transport across The Bahamas.
This new service complements an already impressive fleet of advanced life support ground ambulances and enhances the hospital’s ability to respond to urgent and time-sensitive medical needs, enabling rapid medical evacuation and specialized transfers from remote islands and regional partners directly to Doctors Hospital facilities. The fully equipped aircraft and trained clinical team will provide critical care transport for patients requiring emergency services.
“The introduction of our air ambulance service is a strategic and necessary step in improving access to emergency care throughout The Bahamas and beyond,” said Dr. James Iferenta, Executive Director of Emergency Services and SVP at Doctors Hospital Health System. “In life- threatening situations, timely intervention can make all the difference. This service allows us to close gaps in access and ensures continuity of care from the point of pickup through hospital admission.”
The aircraft is outfitted with advanced life support systems and intensive care equipment, staffed by experienced emergency medical professionals, including critical care nurses and paramedics. Operating out of Nassau, the service is available for urgent inter-island transfers, regional medical support, and coordination with both public and private sector providers.
The launch aligns with Doctors Hospital Health System’s ongoing investment in advanced infrastructure and cutting-edge innovation, including the upcoming openings of new outpatient centers in Eleuthera and Village Road, as well as the highly anticipated Rockwell Medical Centre in Grand Bahama.
“The launch of Doctors Hospital’s air ambulance service marks a pivotal advancement in our mission to deliver equitable, responsive healthcare to every patient we serve. This service enhances our ability to provide urgent, specialized care seamlessly across our health system, connecting individuals to critical medical support when time and clinical coordination are essential. More than a transport solution, it is a fully integrated extension of our emergency response system staffed and equipped to provide advanced interventions en route. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to meet the needs of patients across the Bahamas and expand the offerings of our Health care system,” said Dr. Charles Diggiss, President & CEO of Doctors Hospital Health System.
